Specifications
This knife was a gift fom from knife maker Geoffroy Gautier (
Gamma Brand) who mirror polished the
blade and thinned the edge a little.
Basic specifications :
- slipjoint
- nail nick
- the blade steel is 1075
- the handle is buffalo horn
- 3.5" blade, 0.115" thick
- full flat grind 4.5 degrees per side
- edge is less than 0.005" thick
Initial Impressions
Initial impressions/observations :
- nice mirror polish
- ultra fine cutting profile, edge and primary
- handle is comfortable, aside from square transition at bolster
- very stiff spring action
- spine is not rounded, but edges are broken
- edge has a very slight recurve
- very light, neutral balance
- primary grind is off centered
- point is a bit rounded
- handle scales are a bit uneven (not flush with each other)
It may seem like a lot of issues with fit and finish, however these are very
small issues and the knife has to be very carefully examined to really make
them stand out.
Stock testing : main
The initial sharpness was low to moderate :
Some numbers :
- Push cut Espirit baisting thread with 90 (5) grams
- Slice Berga spinning thread under 40 grams of tension with 0.9 (1)
cm of edge
- 3/8" hemp
- push : 24 (1) lbs
- slice : 19 (1) lbs
On carving wood
compared to the #1260 Mora the Pradel Yatagan :
- was decently comfortable
- bit into the wood extremely well
- easily controlable on thick or thin slices
Through making a dozen slices it had a 10% (5) advantage over the Mora. This
difference is so small that unless you are counting cuts it would never be
seen. While the Yatagan does have a thinner edge, in general with light force
that was being used here (15-20 lbs) the cuts were shallow so it was more
about the edge itself not the primary grind. The Mora also had a slight
leverage advantage as it is sharpened right back to the handle. In general
then, they both are in the same class for light wood carving.
In extended use, making 1000 slices,
