Sportsman's Dream Knife Collection

Yes, this is the set of knives offered on the informercial that comes on at about 2:30 in the morning Last week I saw them at a flea market and picked them up ($10) as a joke gift for my brother. However when I got home curiosity got the better of me. They are advertized as 440 surgical stainless steel, I assume that's 440A, but get this they are hardened to 45 rockwell, no, that's not a typo - 45.

It is basically a large collection of knives which include a large cleaver, a small paring knife, a handsaw, two filleting knives, a utility knife, and a small fixed blade that comes with a sheath. Some edges are straight, some are waved, some are serrated, some are "stippled" (small pointy serrations) and some are combinations. The straight edges are all extreemly blunt ie. you can put draw them across your arm with enough pressure to leave a mark without breaking the skin. The serrated edges are basically an extreemly worn Spyderco pattern, all the points are rounded.

They all cut very poorly except the smallest utility knife which has a very aggressive serration pattern, its basically like a small single file saw blade, impossible to sharpen though. I sharpened the straight edges using a x-coarse hone and they cut ok but blunted extreemly rapidly. They were unable to take a normal 2x2 feet box and cut it up into strips before going blunt. I sharpened the large filleting knife by just grinding the back of the serration pattern a little (I did not want to put the effort into sharpening the serrations themselves which were very blunt). This performed much better than the straight edge, it could cut up the 2x2 box but was just ripping through it near the end.

The worse part though was not the edge holding but the lateral strength. During normal use each blade bent as you would expect with the slim profiles, however they did not return to true, this was a small angle, say 15 - 35 degrees. As for the handles, they are hard plastic, not comfortable and slippery when wet.
