Introduction and Specifications

This knife was part of a series of four mules/test blades made from SM-100. Maker Webpage : YT channel. Basic specifications :

Stock cutting

The initial sharpness was measured at :

On 3/8" hemp :

On carving wood compared to the #1260 Mora :

As expected, cutting ability is similar in low force as the angles are similar, but in heavy force the test/mule pulls ahead because of the primary grind providing a strong relief to the edge.

As a quick check on edge durability :

The edge has no excessive :

Edge Retention

On Cardboard it performs as a Class I type steel :

Sharpening

As a first check on the edge using a MXF DMT (6 microm) :

However Ti alloys in general can gum up diamond stones and end up galling.

Switching to another less than ideal case :

This was just another experiment at different abrasives, not an ideal one in fact this is almost always a worse case scenario.

The edge at the right is not ideal :

This is not a good sign as it is showing that the material can not hold that scratch pattern. However this is a poor stone and this is still early in the sharpening of the blade.

However even using a fairly decent stone, a 1000 grit King, the same problems resurface :
